MapQuesting a Meme

Rick Olson of the superb Coosa Creek Cinema has tagged me for a meme. Here's the Q 'n D of it all:

1.) Think of a place (real or fictional) and time (past, present, future) portrayed in a movie (or a few) that you would love to visit.
2.) List the setting, period, applicable movie, and year of the applicable movie’s release (for reference).
3.) Explain why, however you’d like (bullet points, list, essay form, screenshots, etc.). If this is a time and place that you have intimate knowledge of, feel free to describe what was done well and what wasn’t done well in portraying it.
4.) If possible, list and provide links to any related movies, websites, books, and/or articles that relate to your choice (s).
5.) Modify Rules #1-4 to your liking. And come up with a better name for this meme.
6.) Link back to this Getafilm post in your post, please.
7.) Tag at least five others to participate!

That's from the GetaFilm site hosted by Daniel Getahun who is the originator of this meme. I had to think about this for a little bit. I don't mind the whole meme thing, it's just sometimes it's hard for me to follow the rules. So I'll do my best. I started thinking about what places I would like to visit and oddly enough almost all of my conclusions came to some form of a director's alternate universe. These films, with the exception of one title, exist in the years they were released. As is the case with any of these lists, this is in no way a definitive culmination of my brainstorming...but it's the best I could come up with for now, so let's get to it...

I'm going to do this by chronological order of when the film came out (Oh, and all of my DVD's are boxed up in storage right now, so all screen caps are coming from the net and some of them aren't as specific as I would be had I access to my own collection):

Duck Soup (1933, directed by Leo McCarey)

Ah yes, what a maddening euphoria it would have been to exist in Freedonia. Duck Soup is a film that takes place in an alternate universe, sure, but it seems eerily absurd like The United States of America. There are a lot of parallels to Freedonia's problems and the problems we face in America today, so how great would it be to have lived in Freedonia with a president who (gasps) tells the truth. Oh how we could have used someone like Rufus T. Firefly in our previous administration to just tell it like it is...if only there was a song...

"If any form of pleasure is exhibited, report to me and it will be prohibited! I'll put my foot down, so shall it be... this is the land of the free! The last man nearly ruined this place he didn't know what to do with it. If you think this country's bad off now, just wait till I get through with it! The country's taxes must be fixed, and I know what to do with it. If you think you're paying too much now, just wait till I get through with it!"

Anyway, that's just part of the fun of this film. It's one of the all time great comedies, and I think it would have been a hell of a ride going through what we went through for eight years (and are still feeling the effects of) with someone as blunt and rudely honest as Firefly. Hey, at least we would get the truth.

The Alternate Universe that is 1970's Italian Horror (1970's, directors: Lucio Fulci, Umberto Lenzi, and Dario Argento)

Whenever I talk about Italian Horror on this blog I almost always throw around the word ethereal. These films displace the viewer creating alternate realities that are unlike anything in the genre. Sometimes that's a good thing, but more often than not it's a bad thing. Take for instance the place I would love to visit from all of these 1970 Italian Horror films: "New York City". This "NYC" is actually Rome posing as the Big Apple (except for a few of the exteriors in Fulci's Zombi 2), and often times (like Kubrick's "New York" in Eyes Wide Shut) it does create an eerie feeling (usually if in the hands of Argento or a motivated Fulci, not hacks like Lenzi) that displaces the viewer. It's also the backdrop for what are some of the craziest goings-on I've seen in any horror film. The "city" is also often the catalyst for sending our protagonists in jungles of the Amazon where they are killed by cannibals. I think I'd like to go there to tell these characters that you don't have to stand there and watch them eat your friend...you can run and get the hell out of there!

More than anything the "New York" and other alternate realities of Italian Horror (especially "Louisiana" from Fulci's The Beyond) are home to sport coat wearing zombies; killer spiders (some real, some not so much) that hiss like snakes, and chew off people's faces; and among other things, an all Jazzercise channel that gets interrupted by tons of infected, blood-thirsty scientists. Come on! Who wouldn't want to be a part of that swingin' "city".

The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999, directed by Anthony Minghella)

The Rome of Minghella's masterpiece (I must really want to visit Italy) is the most realistic out of all of these places that compile this list. The Rome I want to visit exists in the 1950's, specifically the Rome as experience by rich, easy-going playboy Dickie Greenleaf, his fiance Marge, and a mysterious "friend", Tom Ripley. Before the horrifying events unfold that really set this brilliant film in motion, the viewer is treated to a bevy of luscious scenery and stunning on-location cinematography that made me want to, for the only time in my life, wish I were rich. To be rich and to be in Dickie's position -- to drive around Rome on a Vespa with a beautiful woman, drink expensive alcohol while laying on the beach, sitting in cafes all day, have no responsibilities -- and to have it all in beautiful 1950's Rome...well sign me up. I could live there forever. Especially when Tom and Dickie go out on the boat and are surrounded by nothing but beauty and an eerie silence, a man could definitely be inspired there. Well until...you know...that thing happens...

American Movie (1999, directed by Chris Smith)

You can kind of call this an alternate reality because really I don't think amateur horror filmmaker Mark Borchardt has any idea what reality means. But man is he passionate about getting his film made, and that passion is infectious. The specific place I would want to be is in Milwaukee with Mark, all the time, talking about horror film (it's no secret what a fan I am of the genre), and hoping that just maybe, someday, I could be as passionate about something as he is about getting his film Coven made. The specific scene I'm thinking of is when he's editing late into the night at the local university, splicing together scenes at the last second, mulling over every decision like Scorsese would with his films. It's a scene that shows the drive (even though often he appears to have no drive) this man has. It's kind of like the Coens' Fargo: these people are etched out of a specific geography, and I wouldn't mind being there, because really, there's a character on every corner.

Apatown, U.S.A. (2000's, directors: Judd Apatow, Greg Mottola, and Akiva Schaffer)

This is another one of the alternate realities that I would love to live in where guys like Steve Carrell, Jonah Hill, and Seth Rogen are hooking up with beautiful women. I'm like those guys...and I guess this alternate universe isn't so far fetched since I am getting married this summer to a beautiful woman...so hey, us nerds do get lucky sometimes (for the record I don't know how I fooled my fiance...). Films like Superbad and The 40 Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up exist in that bizarre Apatow realm where geek is chic and it doesn't matter what you look like, what your social status is, or any of that crap: it's your individuality (and weirdness...or read: geekiness) that sets apart from everyone else and makes you attractive.

I threw Akiva Schaffer's name on there, too, because he's obviously indebted to Apatow's style, plus I've been obsessed with Hot Rod lately: it's a brisk 80 minute comedy starring Andy Samberg that also exists in the same retro, thrift store habilimented (thank you Thesauras iPhone app!) universe where the dork gets the extremely beautiful girl (Isla Fisher) because they don't change who they are. By the way, the movie actually is pretty funny and I can't convince myself to stop watching whenever I come across it on Direct TV.

Well, there ya have it. I proabbly flubbed the rules a bit, but these are the places in film I would most like to visit. So...it's taggin' time:

Troy, Sam, Ed, Andrew, and Ali.

Dog Breath

This is a follow up to Mr. Wolf with pUPpies where Jim finished off his additions with this image:

In the movie Napoleon we find the Golden pUPpy once again flying high into the Blue sky. The pUP wears a Red Ribon and is accompanied by a Penguin, an OZtralian Koala and a Red-breasted paRRot:

Notice above that the 4 white strings connecting the basket to the Rainbow Balloons form a Pyramid which highlight the letters POLE of 'NaPOLEon'. This resonates with Polaris the North Star, but it's also linked to another syncnificant Star.

I've tried to restrain myself from harping on about Sirius but to interpret this sync I'm going to have to turn once again to the Blue/Black Dog-Star.

Archaeo-Astrologer Walter Cruttenden believes that Sirius is our binary companion and is responsible for the cycles of Time and the 'Great Year' aka The Precession of the Equinox. The Precession is caused by the Earths wobble and Cruttenden believes that this tilt is a result of our motion around our partnering star. Although there's no conclusive evidence to back this up (yet) Sirius is the likeliest candidate for causing the Poles of the Earth to change orientation.

If we turn to the movie Beethoven we find that the Dog is connected to the Red I, or Red Eye, and the pUPpies. If we join the imaginary lines of this Red Carpet we'd find that the Nose of Beethoven is located at the apex of this Red Pyramid:

I was watching TV this afternoon and the original Beethoven movie was playing (for what feels like the 100th time). I've never watched the whole film but I happened to catch a scene where Beethoven had been fenced in due to his bad behaviour and was trying desperately to dig his way out. The camera pans from a shot of his Paws digging at the dirt to a hedge at the side of his enclosure. On that hedge, I kid you not, was a huge sculpture of a Nose. Just a human Nose sticking out...nothing else. Strange!

So feeling like this sync was leading somewhere I continued watching and the very next scene we're taken to the fathers workplace. Above the head of the father, who was sat behind his desk speaking to David Duchovny (FOX Mulder), there again was the giant Nose. It seemed to be the symbol for his company. A week ago this sync wouldn't have meant anything, but now I know the Nose is linked to Gnosis - knowledge of spiritual matters; mystical knowledge - this Nose reference didn't seem odd at all.

So I found the Dog Beethoven connected to Spiritual Truth and the deeper wisdom of the Gnostics. I've often thought that as our twin Sun (Sirius) moves closer to Earth we begin to awaken to knowledge and wisdom which has long been forgotten. As Sirius moves away from us in it's binary orbit mankind begins to forget, to regress, and ultimately we lose track of our role in this Universe. As Sirius swings back around and begins moving closer to Earth this process begins to reverse. We begin to awakening to the finer forces of the Nature. We begin to remember and like someone who has just blown their Nose, the nasal passages of Spirit become now unblocked. There's nothing to inhibit the floW of KKonsciousness and as a result we begin to inhale the sweet scent of the Divine. It's like those smelling salts that doctors use to snap someone out of their unconscious state. That's the theory anyhoo.

So getting back to the Dog we find that actor Gary Oldman has also payed the role of Beethoven in the movie Immortal Beloved:

Gary Oldman, or the G.Oldman, might resonate with Beethoven the Dog but he's also been Sirius Black in the Harry Potter movies. Oldman has been one of my key Sirius actors right from the very beginning of my journey into synchronicity.

Jim mentioned in the Mr. Wolf post that the Space Dog is connected to this sync-web. In this childrens book we see that Sirius is a Space Dog who is 'man-kinds closest companion - on our world and in distant times and places':

Notice above that this Sirius Space Dog above is also connected to the name 'Potter' (think Harry whose Godfather is the G.Oldman/Beethoven/Sirius).

In Mr. Wolf with pUPpies Jim points out that the Space Buddies resonate Blue and Gold. We see that the Blue Sun shining behind the title is connected to our Blue binary Buddy/Companion (Sirius) which may help us become One with our inner-Buddha:

In this next movie we find the Black Dog (Sirius Black) sat right on top of the North POLE and in the title we see that the Red I/Eye (albeit reversed) is connected to the Paw Print of the Dog:

Let's recall that the Red Eye of Shiva is really the Red Eye of Sirius. In Hinduism Shiva (the Blue One) and Sirius (the Blue Star) are interchangeable with one another. Could Shiva/Sirius be responsible for the wobble of the Earths poles? Could it awaken the Dog/God within?

In the past the Dog may have Gone (Dog-Gone) as it moved away from our Sun (plunging us gradually into a Dark Age of ignorance) but fortunately for us it seems to be coming back which is why we are beginning to ascend once again, just like the pUP:

The Beethoven/Nose connection (mentioned earlier) makes sense when we consider that the Universe ebs and flows just like the rhythm of the breath. When we breath in we are pulling Spirit towards us - we are absorbing and moving closer to Source. Symbolically this is when Sirius is moving in our direction. As we breath out through our Nostrils we release Spirit - we disconnect/distance ourselves from Source. This is symbolic of Sirius moving away from our Solar System. We become distanced from Gnosis. This process has been happening for Dog knows how long. It's not that the lack of Gnosis is wrong or bad or the work of the Devil. It's a natural cycle/rhythm that keeps the cosmic symphony of life floWing.

I feel optimistic about our future because I believe we are currently in the process of inhaling Spirit and as a result we're climbing UP to higher dimensions of thought and imagination. This is being reflected in the rapid evolution of our technology and we can see it here on a personal level by the rapid evolution of Synchronicites which seem to speeding up as we draw more Spirit into our Sync Whole/Nose Wholes. The more Air we inhale, the more we connect with our serious Buddie and the more we align with the Gold/Blue Buddha:

As the pUP is REborn the Collective Egg is beginning to break. The nasal passages are being opened so that we can inhale and integrate more Spirit than we where able to in the past. It's the 'Big Break' in Life that we've all been waiting for:

The Big Break is helping a crack open our fragile Eggo. As the light spills in, bringing Illumination to the Dark Age which is now coming to an end, we see that the G.Oldman begins to stand up/awaken. Notice that the G.Old Beethoven stands with his arm open just like Christ:

As the light shines through the hole in the Egg we are REborn and free to hatch from our Chrysallis which housed us during this transitional period. With new Wings of Gold we can now fly Up nto the Blue:

In the childrens tale it's the Wolf who helps Blow/Blue down the the Pigs houses. The arrival of the Big Bad Wolf (star) helps break down the Walls so that the Pig can breathe in Spirit in through the Gnostrils of Gnosis:

Return of the Nose

Return of the gNOSEs.

This video was made over a month ago with children from the rural Manitoban town of Grosse Isle (Big Eyeland).

They came up with it all themselves and I thought it was quite rich in syncs and resonance of the times we are in.

Now that Arrowsmith has dropped his Udderly Potty post over at Blackdogstar, it seems fitting to post this little video now.

So here is Return of the Nose...

Cheavin's Water Filter

This photo of Cheavin's Saludor Water Filter is taken at the Methodist Archival Museum in Sibu. This is a ceramic water filter fitted with an amazing filtration system. Doctors and dentists have been known to use them very effectively in the early days of Sibu.

This water purifier from the early 20th century worked on the principle of passing water through a carbon or charcoal filter. It is like water filters in homes today.

The tall stoneware ceramic container has a lead free glaze. Its domed lid has an interior ridge to prevent it from slipping off. Near the base of the container is a hole leading inside the container. A small metal tap blocks the hole, allowing water to be drained out of the container when required. On the outside of the container are the words 'Cheavins Saludor Safe Water Filter. Drinking Water of Absolute Purity, British Made Throughout'.

The filter system was inside the container. The container would be filled with charcoal, and water poured into the top of the container. As the water passed through the charcoal it was cleansed. The clean water was drawn from the bottom of the container through the tap.

Charcoal is pure carbon, made from the partial burning of organic waste. It contains ions that help to kill germs, and it works on the principle of absorption. Large amounts of gases, including poisonous ones, and gases that create bad smells and tastes in water stick to the charcoal. It is porous, and has, therefore, large surface areas that absorb gas.

Dimensions: Height:43cm

In the 1950's my family lived in Pulau Kerto at the Ice Factory and our water supply came straight from the Rajang River with the help of a small pump which my father worked at once in a while. Some of the water we used for washing came directly to the doorstep when the flood water reached the bottom of the stairs.

In the kitchen was this Cheavin's Saludor Water Filter standing at a small counter . I would always remember it as pure tasty water would come out of a tap at the bottom and my mother told me that the water was "spring water" after it was filtered inside the huge cannister. I imagined that I was tapping the water from a series of rocks and the water came out miraculously as Moses' rod struck the rock wall! My mother loved this particular water filter as it was not only a social symbol of well being but a symbol of my father's love for good living and for the family.

Our water filter mysteriously "disappeared" when the family moved lock stock and barrel from the Ice Factory to the house on Kung Ping Road in Sibu. My mother never knew who took it away or why. And father was not a person who would find fault with the movers.

I am sure many families in Sibu continue to keep them as treasures in their homes. This water filter was popularly sold all over the world in 1890-1950's before chlorine treated water supply became the norm. I have read somewhere that the original company which sold Cheavin's Saludor Water Filter was established in Boston USA. However I still need to check this fact out.

At the present moment Singapore History Museum at Riverside Point has one unit for exhibition. I do hope that the unit in our Methodist Archival Museum will continue to help educate our younger generation.

How I wish I still have one now.
