Fairy Tales in the Making?

Films with a Fairytale theme, currently in production or rumoured to be...
(Updated Feb 26, 2011)

Here's what we know about the 3 (make that 4?) proposed adaptations of Snow White. Wondering whose box office weight will carry the day and see the film to its completion? Kristen Stewart as Snow White? vs Julia Roberts as the evil queen? vs Disney - the kingpin of fairytales?!26

1- Snow White and the Huntsman (Universal)
Kristen Stewart as Snow White
Charlize Theron as evil witch
Viggo Mortensen as Huntsmen
***Release Dec 21, 2012***
"This new take on the fairy tale sees an expanded role for the Huntsman. In the original story, he is ordered to take Snow White into the woods and kill her, but instead lets her go. Here, the two are chained together for part of the movie as they make their escape. The Huntsman is not a love interest (fear not, the prince is still in the story) but acts more as a mentor, teaching the teen girl to fight and survive." [movieweb]

2- The Brothers Grimm: Snow White (Relativity Media)
Julia Roberts as evil witch
??? as Snow White
Tarsem Singh (director)
***Release June 29, 2012 ***
"Brett Ratner recently revealed the movie is set to be completely different from the Disney original, with scriptwriter Melisa Wallack revisiting the original 500-year-old folk tale. He said: "This is not your grandfather's Snow White. Melisa went back to the 500-year-old folk tale and put in some of the things that were missing from Walt Disney's film. His dwarves were miners, and here they are robbers.Walt made one of the great movies of all time, but ours is edgy and there is more comedy. The original, made for its time, was soft compared to what we're going to do." [source]

3- Snow and the Seven (Disney)
Writer - Michael Arndt (from Toy Story 3)
*** Release 2013? ***
Live-action East-meets-West take on the "Snow White" fairy tale with the fantasy adventure centering on a British girl being raised in 19th century Hong Kong. When she realizes her destiny is to conquer an evil force, she must prepare to fight by being trained by seven Shaolin monks." [source]

The latest casting news, (although still just a rumour) is that Amanda Seyfried will become Disney's newest princess in a remake of Cinderella (presumably banking on the popularity as seen by Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland). Seyfried is currently working on The Girl With the Red Riding Hood, a gothic remake to be produced by Leonardo Dicaprio.

The Bear and the Bow (2011)
Disney-Pixar film will feature the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson and Julie Walters. (
Pixar's first fairy tale, is a combination of writer Brenda Chapman's love of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm)

Enchanted sequel?
Variety reports that plans are in the works for a sequel to the highly successful 'Enchanted' which starred Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey. No word yet on cast or plotline.
I'm still waiting on word of a suitable script and that Amy Adams will return.

Joe Wright (director of 2005 P&P) considering a live action "Little Mermaid"?

Elizabeth Banks to Play Live-Action Tinker Bell ?

Tim Burton to remake Sleeping Beauty?
Sounds like Burton's next film might focus on the evil fairy Maleficent. Angelina Jolie's name is being dropped to take on the lead role of Maleficent.

Beauty Sleep
Australian production of Sleeping Beauty to be directed by Mark Rosman, screenplay by Becca Topol (synopsis)

Legends
"The story in “Legends” is set in motion when the remains of Pinocchio are discovered. Red Hood, now a noted wolf hunter, and Jack partner to discover who is murdering the creatures of folklore. Along the way, they are assisted by characters such as Goldilocks, re-imagined as a mercenary, and Hansel & Gretel, now psychic exterminators. The world of the graphic novel is a mash-up of steampunk and creatures, technology and magic."

Hansel and Gretel in 3D
"Hansel & Gretel in 3D is an action packed visual FX filled version of the beloved Grimm Brothers' fairy tale. This famous story is known around the globe from Japan to Germany to Australia. Cutting edge special effects and non-stop action usher this timeless tale into the millennium. The story takes place against the backdrop of an enchanted forest in Germany. The film blends the gothic mystique of witchcraft with fantastical creatures and endearing human characters. "Hansel & Gretel in 3D" will introduce the legendary beings of Teutonic (Germanic) mythology. A collection of German history's most notorious and intriguing characters will be unveiled to modern movie audiences for the first time."

Tangled (2010)
"In this new telling of the classic fairy tale, Rapunzel, audiences will be transported to a stunning CG fantasy world complete with the iconic tower, an evil witch, a gallant hero and, of course, the mysterious girl with the long golden tresses. Expect adventure, heart, humor, and hair… lots of hair"
